In a technical sense, what is the difference between these? Is there a performance difference, or is it that the external ones are typically higher capacity?
Ok, so do the external portable drives use flash memory, while the regular ones are more like an internal drive with a hard disk?

Non-portable are usually bigger and come with power adapters.
