How can I create an audible and/or visible alarm on my computer to notify me when E-mail has arrived?

Would it be possible to rig up an automatic audible and/or visual alarm or notification of some kind to notify me immediately when E-mail has arrived? It would help if the alarm would be capable of bringing my computer out of a standby mode if it is in one, override anything I'm currently working on, and perhaps repeat periodically to keep reminding me that a new unread message is waiting for me. It would be helpful if I would also be allowed to adjust most of the audible or visual settings.
